Weekend Read: What I’d Do If I Had to Grow a Business from Zero Using Only Instagram

Published on 20 April 2025 at 09:00

Let’s imagine something bold for a sec:
You wake up tomorrow and have to start your business completely from scratch — no audience, no website, no email list.

You’re allowed to use only Instagram.

What do you do?

Whether you’re starting fresh or trying to re-spark growth, this stripped-down scenario is a great way to get clear on what really matters.

Here’s exactly what I’d do.

Today’s Business Example: A Freelance Makeup Artist

Let’s say I’m a local MUA offering services for weddings, photoshoots, and events. I’ve got the skills — now I need to get clients, fast, using nothing but Instagram.

1. Treat My Bio Like a Mini Website

Make it clear what I do, where I’m based, and how to book me.

Example:

💄 Bridal & Event Makeup
📍Belfast | On-location
📩 DM to book or check availability
🔗 [Link to booking form]

2. Post 3–5x/Week With Purpose

Not random selfies — strategic content built around trust.

Post categories:

  • Transformation posts (before/after)

  • Client testimonials

  • Tips + advice (ex: how to prep for makeup day)

  • Behind-the-scenes from weddings or shoots

  • Availability updates + call-to-actions

Use carousels, Reels, and strong captions with CTA lines like:

“Tag a bride-to-be 👇” or “DM to grab a weekend slot!”

3. Use Stories Daily to Show My Work + Personality

Stories build connection. I’d show:

  • Behind The Scenes of getting my kit ready

  • A quick 3-second timelapse of applying foundation

  • Me answering “what’s your go-to long-wear product?”

  • A poll: “Bold lip or neutral glam?”

  • My open slots for the week

Bonus: Add Highlights for reviews, FAQs, and bridal packages.

4. Engage Like It’s My Job (Because It Kind of Is)

Every day, I’d:

  • Comment on local business accounts (photographers, venues, stylists)

  • Reply to story polls + comment on bridal posts

  • Follow hashtags like #BelfastBride or #WeddingMakeup

It’s not spam — it’s community building.

5. Use Instagram DM to Start Conversations

Instead of “link in bio,” I’d say:

“DM me ‘WEDDING’ for my bridal guide”

Now I’m in a conversation. Way more effective than a cold click.

6. Leverage My Location With Every Post

Use geo-tags, location-based hashtags, and shoutouts to vendors.

“Stunning shoot today with @lcnails01 at @ballyscullion_park 💐💄”

Local = relevant = leads.
